The Difference Between Alumina Ceramics And Transparent Ceramics

Different concepts
Alumina ceramics are a type of ceramic material with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as the main component.
Transparent ceramics are obtained by using high-purity ultrafine ceramic raw materials and removing pores through process means to obtain ceramics with transparent properties.

 

Different composition and classification
Alumina ceramics are divided into high-purity and ordinary types.
High-purity alumina ceramics are ceramic materials with an Al2O3 content of more than 99.9%. Due to their sintering temperature of 1650-1990℃ and a transmission wavelength of 1-6μm, they are generally made into molten glass to replace platinum crucibles; they are used as sodium lamps using their light transmittance and resistance to alkali metal corrosion; they can be used as integrated circuit substrates and high-frequency insulation materials in the electronics industry.
Ordinary alumina ceramics are divided into 99 porcelain, 95 porcelain, 90 porcelain, 85 porcelain and other varieties according to the content of Al2O3. Sometimes, those with an Al2O3 content of 80% or 75% are also classified as ordinary alumina ceramics. Among them, 99 alumina ceramic materials are used to make high-temperature crucibles, refractory furnace tubes and special wear-resistant materials, such as ceramic bearings, ceramic seals and water valve plates; 95 alumina ceramics are mainly used as corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant parts; 85 ceramics are often mixed with some talc to improve electrical properties and mechanical strength, and can be sealed with metals such as molybdenum, niobium, and tantalum. Some are used as electric vacuum devices.
Transparent ceramics can be divided into alumina transparent ceramics, yttrium oxide transparent ceramics, magnesium oxide transparent ceramics, yttrium aluminum garnet transparent ceramics, aluminum magnesium acid transparent ceramics, transparent ferroelectric ceramics, aluminum nitride transparent ceramics, aluminum oxynitride transparent ceramics, magnesium aluminum spinel transparent ceramics, etc.

 

Different performance
◎ Alumina ceramic performance:
1. High hardness
According to the measurement of the Shanghai Institute of Silicates, Chinese Academy of Sciences, its Rockwell hardness is HRA80-90, which is second only to diamond and far exceeds the wear resistance of wear-resistant steel and stainless steel.
2. Excellent wear resistance
The Powder Metallurgy Research Institute of Central South University has determined that its wear resistance is 266 times that of manganese steel and 171.5 times that of high-chromium cast iron. According to our customer follow-up survey over the past decade, under the same working conditions, the service life of the equipment can be extended by at least ten times.
3. Light weight
Its density is 3.5g/cm3, which is only half of that of steel, which can greatly reduce the load on the equipment.
◎ Transparent ceramic performance:
As a branch of advanced ceramics, transparent ceramics not only inherit the high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength, high hardness, chemical stability, and low expansion coefficient of ceramics, but also have unique light transmittance that adds many applications.

 

Different applications
Alumina ceramics are widely used in machinery, optical fiber, cutting tools, medical, food, chemical, aerospace and other industries.
Transparent ceramics are mainly used in lighting fixtures, laser materials, infrared window materials, scintillating ceramics, electro-optical ceramics, and bulletproof materials.
